Antigua, Fuerteventura

Antigua is a small town, but it is the administrative centre for the municipality of Antigua. Most of the municipality of Antigua covers a plain some 200 metres above sea level and this made it ideal, in the past, for the location of windmills. The towns and villages of Agua de Bueyes, Casillas Morales, Valles de Ortega, La Corte, Antigua, Las Pocetas, Los Alares, Pozo Negro, Las Salinas del Carmen, Caleta de Fustes, Costa de Antigua, Los Llanoz del dinerro and Triquvijate are all located within the municipality. Many of these hold fiestas, (see below for details).

The Centro de Artesania, a tourist attraction based around a restored windmill, can be found in the town of Antigua. Besides the restored windmill, that allows visitors to see the inside of a restored windmill there is a fine cactus garden, a restaurant and several craft workshops.

The church of Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Antigua, originally built in 1785, and restored in the last century, is very picturesque. When we visited Antigua, the church was open to the public, as is often the case. The inside of the church is worth seeing.
