Costa Caleta, Fuerteventura

A safe family holiday resort.

Caleta de Fuste is a purpose built holiday resort, with safe beaches for the family. Although there is no old town area there are some old fortifications by the Atlantic shopping centre and at the other end of the beach near the harbour. Caleta was created around the original cove, which developed into a harbour and beach resort because it offered safe sheltered environment for bathers.

The Beaches at Caleta

Originally there was one beach in Caleta, created by importing some pale golden sand making it perfect for sunbathing and swimming. Later the beaches close to the Atlantico centre were created improving facilities for the Hotel Sara, Sheraton and Elba Carlotta Hotels but there was still an untidy rocky area between the two. More work has now been completed and sandy beaches now cover the area from close to the harbour to the Atlantico creating a huge bathing area. There is a restaurant here out in the sea accessed via a walkway, called the Chiringuito. There are toilet facilities and some hildren's play areas.A pathway is also in place so that you can walk the whole way along the beach front.

Caleta de Fuste Map

There are around three dozen holiday complexes around Caleta de Fuste, most offering one or two bed apartments, self catering facilities, centred around a pool. You can see where these are located by looking at the Caleta map

The apartment complexes are in three main areas, the central town of Caleta de Fuste, Costa Antigua, to the north, and Chipmunk mountain to the east (its not really a mountain, but it is uphill). There are lots of hotels and restaurants to choose from and they are generally of a very high standard.

The mini train.

Caleta Harbour

The harbour area in Caleta has also been improved recently with the addition of the walkway and some refurbishment to the restaurants in the area. There is also a very pretty merry-go-round and there is now a new mini train that can take you on a trip through Caleta and up Chipmonk mountain. As well as the harbour you can catch the train by the chemist shown as a cross on the Caleta map There are some lovely boats in the harbour and you can see a lot of fish round the waters. It is also the place to book a diving trip, or maybe do a spot of fishing. There is a new kind of bouncy castle play area in the sea, a pirate ship and a place to swim with a seal!

Transport in Caleta

There are plenty of taxis in Caleta, you can't book them in advance, but it is very rare that you have to wait long to get one, generally 5 to 10 minutes of being called. You are allowed to flag them down, and if you try to flag them down and they are busy they will radio through to arrange one for you. (00 34) 928163004 is the taxi number. A bus centre hs been built, and from there you can easily get a no 3 to take you into Puerto del Rosario, which is the capital of Fuerteventura. On this bus the other direction will take you to Las Salinas, which is very quiet place, but has a nice restaurant and the salt museum.

The development of Caleta de Fuste

Caleta de Fuste has expanded over recent of years. There are now two established 18 hole Golf Courses. And many quality hotels including the Elba Carlotta, which boasts the island's first casino , where you can also have a nice meal.

The resort of Caleta de Fuste, has been developed in such a way that it is enjoyed by families and others who appreciate a safe, relaxing holiday in a friendly environment.

Many Names of Caleta

The town of Caleta has for some reason many names, such as Caleta de Fuste, Caleta, El Castillo (because of the 17th century fortification) and most recently Costa Caleta. This causes some confusion, as some visitors think these are different places, and that it might be nice to visit one of the others! The local Spanish people call it just " El Castillo" which is quite confusing.
